Dear 82 News Committee,

I am writing to express my greatest gratitude for all the great work that we have completed. As a writer, I truly feel embraced by the flexibility of the content and the support from the members.

It is finally coming to an end, and I sincerely wish that 82 news will be able to continue in the future semesters. As far as we know, the Awareness Committee is a new branch under SJCSA. I am very grateful to see such a unique perspective is given equal attention to other committees now. St John’s is becoming a more inclusive environment with students coming from all different backgrounds who possess distinctive perspectives. It is amazing to have such a platform (including 82 news, MAKE, talk etc.) that enables students to freely express their ideas.

The biggest challenge that 82 news is facing is the lack of an audience. It is not particularly demanding for writers to produce one piece of work every week, neither is it too exhausting for the editors to proof-read 5 articles. But the amount of reads we receive every week is significantly lower than the efforts that we have put in. Thus, as a writer, I provide several of my suggestions:

1. Paper Magazine

The rationale of having the paper magazine is to provide a better way for people who happen to sit in CR to kill their time. Although it may not be an environmental solution, compared with the amount of toilet paper we wasted and useless lectures handouts, it is worthy to sacrifice 20 pages of nice A4 paper that carry the intellectuality of amazing ideas.

2. Address it more often

How to grab people’s attention ? By talking about it! As writers and editors, we can talk about the content of the articles when we are hanging out with friends. A great example would be the article on Gambling Rules! People discussed it during meals, including myself. Biologically, humans are born to be social animals, and they don’t want to be left out of a conversation. Many of my friends asked for the link to the articles after hearing us talking about them. This could be a potential way to gain more readers.

3. More writers

Our current writer group is great! But sometimes people may not have much to say in the industry that they are interested in for a particular week. We can hire more writers in the committee and interchangeably assign articles for each week. Of course, active writers are free to contribute pieces as long as they want!

4. The incentive for Writers and Editors?

The best way to motivate employees is to reward 😊 Feel free to disagree haha! We may explore the potential of giving awards to the most active’ writer/editor, or ‘most-read’ article producer, or even more.

Anyways, it is amazing to have such a committee at St John’s!

I enjoyed my semester in the team a lot, and I sincerely hope that we will be able to continue the club!
