A new documentary feature got recently released on Netflix. The Social Dilemma, directed by Jeff Orlowski, investigates how technology is changing the world. The film slowly unfolds how a technological revolution full of promise today is getting closer to a dystopia. The Big Tech, algorithms, AI, human psychology, addiction, privacy, democracy crisis, hate speech – the film touches many sensitive yet relevant issues. While they are not new, the sends a clear message: they are “a feature, not a bug” (NYT).

The Social Dilemma is alerting: every one of us with a social media account is controlled and manipulated. The credibility of the film is strengthened by various appearances of people from prominent tech companies. It is worrying. But the people in the industry stay hopeful. A change is possible, but it needs all of us to be engaged.

Everyone who has a social media account should watch the film right away. If you have already watched it, follow up the creators’ advice on having a “data-detox” and continuing the conversation at https://www.thesocialdilemma.com.
