One of the most beloved games of today’s generation, Fortnite, which has more than 350 million players was recently pulled from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store respectively, but the dispute between the three companies has a much wider implication than one might realise at first. Apple, which recently touched the US$2 Trillion market cap milestone, takes a 30% commission out of every purchase made on a mobile app that is downloaded from its App Store. This 30% cut has not only led to a lot of hue and cry by mobile app developers recently, but also encouraged regulators to step in and have a closer look at whether there might be an antitrust violation by Apple.
Last month in August, Fortnite maker Epic Games added a new option allowing players to make in-app purchases directly from the video game maker and at a discount, leapfrogging the 30% commission rate that Apple generally charges. This move violated Apple’s policies, resulting in Fortnite being removed and a sharp rebuttal from Epic Games, which has taken Apple to court and claimed that Apple is indulging in anti-competitive practices. The outcome of this feud could have widespread repercussions for the rest of the mobile game development community, which is expected to keep a close watch on how the legal dispute ends.
