Joshua Wong calls for boycott of Disney’s ‘Mulan’

Lui Yifei’s support of the Hong Kong police force, Xinjiang being a shooting location are reasons for controversy

Joshua Wong, former pro-democracy protester in Hong Kong, is urging a global boycott of Disney’s live-action version of ‘Mulan’, due to be released in cinemas this month. The film has been neck-deep in controversy ever since the lead actress, Lui Yifei, expressed support for the widely condemned Hong Kong police force in August 2019. The other lead, Donnie Yen, also appears to be pro-Beijing, as per the image he projects on social media.

According to the South China Morning Post, the film has come under fire again, after the revelation that a number of scenes were shot in Xinjiang, where “widespread rights abuses against the region’s Muslim population have been widely documented.” Disney incorporated ‘special thanks’ to eight government entities in Xinjiang, including a bureau where a number of internment camps have been recorded.

A broader related issue is Hollywood’s repeated instances of supporting China in its movies, including avoiding sensitive issues like Hong Kong politics, Taiwan, LGBT characters and Xinjiang.
