More than a decade ago, in 2006, Sony and Microsoft kicked off a rivalry in the gaming consoles business with Sony’s PlayStation 3 squaring off against Microsoft’s Xbox One, and now the two goliaths are gearing up to launch the next edition of their respective gaming consoles, however, this could potentially be the last time we see the Xbox and PlayStation going toe-to-toe as industry experts expect there to be a paradigm shift towards digital gaming and away from hardware consoles. So what are the strengths and weaknesses of each of these two players in what could potentially be the final round of battle?
Sony’s PlayStation 5 is expected to be priced at $499.99 and $399.99 for a version without a disk drive. The company has a relatively more notable history in the video gaming industry, a stronger presence in the European and Japanese markets and a promising in-house gaming lineup consisting of the Spider Man franchise among other titles.
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X is expected to be priced at $499.99 with a less powerful Xbox Series S version priced at $299.99 which undercuts Sony’s pricing and could be a vital difference maker. Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service which has already garnered about 10 million users offers an interesting differential, but their flagship gaming title, Halo, is expected to be significantly delayed and not be available by the time of the launch which is just around the corner.
While there is no clear cut winner that can be pointed out at this stage, both corporations could experience a huge uplift in sales from the ongoing pandemic that has left people craving for more home entertainment options. The growth of digital video game downloading and the advent of cloud based gaming are a couple of new developments that one may observe soon as well.
