Who is Andy Jassy, the next CEO of Amazon?

As Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos prepares to hand over the reigns of his company’s day-to-day operations to Andy Jassy, the current CEO of Amazon’s cloud computing services business - Amazon Web Services (AWS), let us take a closer look at who Jassy is and what we may come to expect from him.

Jassy joined Amazon in 1997 after completing his MBA from Harvard Business School (HBS), working as a “Technical Assistant” to Bezos, a role in which he essentially shadowed Bezos. In 2006, Jassy helped found Amazon’s AWS cloud computing service, which raked in USD 45 billion in revenues in 2020. AWS is the global market leader in the cloud computing space, beating the likes of Microsoft, Google, and Alibaba and has emerged as Amazon’s crown jewel, responsible for the bulk of the company’s profits which are then channeled towards other, less profitable ventures such as Amazon’s over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform that competes with Netflix and Disney+. This makes Jassy’s appointment as CEO a no-brainer, as AWS continues to grow rapidly and finance Amazon’s other businesses.

Opining on Jassy’s style of work, it is believed that Jassy is more of an “ideas guy” than an “operations specialist”. Current and former employees have described a conference room dubbed "The Chop", where Jassy’s various ideas "would get chopped down to size." While his creativity may be a welcome addition to a sprawling empire, Jassy will require a deft touch to maneuver around several sensitive challenges facing Amazon, be it allegations regarding “union busting” or calls for the company to be broken up on grounds of antitrust. As Jassy takes over the helm at one of the world’s most diverse and complex companies with interests in a variety of industries and geographies from Bezos, his work is certainly cut out ahead of him.
