China will release five Indian nationals who were detained earlier this month in a region bordering Tibet. On Tuesday, after receiving reports about five individuals who had gone missing from the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India, an Indian minister confirmed that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army had reported them to be in China.

Their disappearance aligned with a skirmish in the western Himalayas, where the countries accused each other of firing in the air, despite there existing an understanding that firearms would not be used in the undemarcated area.

Border tensions between India and China have been running high since June this year, when several Indian and Chinese soldiers got involved in a high-altitude fist fight. On Thursday, Chinese State Councillor Wang Yi and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar agreed to de-escalate border tensions following a meeting in Moscow.
