Chinese director Chloe Zhao wins top prize at Venice Film Festival 2020

September 12th of 2020 marks the day Chloe Zhao, a 39 year old Chinese-born director based in the American film industry, received the top prize at Venice Film festival with her film Nomadland. Set amongst the van dwellers of the United States of America, it is an ode to the ups and downs of open road living in the country. Critics have hailed it as “a unique portrait of outsider experience”. Zhao is also the first woman to be awarded the prize since Sofia Coppola in 2010 with Somewhere. This work is sure to influence the ever-growing, though nowhere near enough, gender, racial, nationality, and narrative diversity in the American film industry and hopefully international cinema.
Usually hosting 10,000 plus film-goers, journalists, and industry workers, the Venice Film Festival is the first of the “Big Three” prestigious film festivals (Berlin and Canne also) to continue on without cancelling amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale) had just dodged the European outbreak early this year during late February where the Canne International Film Festival is now cancelled.
